Evolution of the Shipping Container

By the year 1982, in my first marine related work, I found myself in the attached dock of the Port of Barcelona controlling the discharge of coffee from a boat whose origin is lost somewhere in my memory. What I do remember with pinpoint accuracy is the work load sack to sack, on pallets to be hoisted from the hold of the ship, were loaded onto trucks and delivered to the corresponding manufactures. I vividly remember waiting between both pallets as the hard work involved downloading that warehouse full of bags of coffee. The container was not yet present.

The next boat was already carrying containers. The coffee sacks came in twenty-foot shipping containers. Everything had changed without any transition. Among the shipments history freight he had suffered an absolute revolution. The first one was still the same as before the advent of maritime container, surely the procedure was similar in different media, as was done in the nineteenth century. While the other already fully containerized. In between the container ship involved in an exchange that would modify the internationalization of world trade facilitating movement by the oceans of much larger amounts of all kinds of products.

The widespread use of container shipping, the time saved in loading and unloading in ports (it went from days to hours downloading them tons!). In addition the goods could go to the door of the factory or warehouse rise to the factory gate at destination without intermediate manipulations and could join the rail.

In this sense, the final step was standardization in measures and the emergence of international agencies regulate the safety, how to inspect, repair sea containers and a single technical vocabulary around the globe that would make any part of the world a cross member out of the container it.

In fact the idea of container kept to maintain relations with the experience of 1982. One of the things I remember from that first experience was the long - interminables- waits between pallet and pallet downloaded. Like, it is said, which used to suffer the 'inventor' of the idea of shipping container as we know it today: Malcom McLean (Maxton, USA, 1913-2001). Thus, in one of those usual waits at all jobs stowage or unloading, watching unloaded his truck bales of cotton for later loading into the ship, he thought it would be different if your truck could be loaded on the boat and destination download the full truck. The year was 1937, but it took almost twenty years until in 1956 the first standardized shipping container made the New York-Houston route between the east coast of the United States and the Texas town on the Gulf of Mexico. From here -and even a consolidation- long, dizzying career began in the second question that would determine the success of the development of maritime container: standardization of sizes, materials, safety ...

At first the materials used were Corten steel, aluminum and wood veneer with fiberglass, currently, except refrigerated sea containers and dry cargo (Dry Van, Box or GP) are all Corten steel.
